Hand-drawn damask patterns on fabric and wallpaper

Whether it’s the plants of an Italian orangery or the vastness of the North Sea beach, there are many things that inspire me to create my damask patterns. Check out a few examples here (click on the arrows in the picture to see more).

All designs are available in my Spoonflower store on fabric, wallpaper and various home decor products like tablecloths, pillows, curtains and bedding.

Toile de Jouy brought to the present

Toile de Jouy patterns have a long history. Toiles were originally produced in Ireland in the mid-18th Century and quickly became popular in Britain and France.
The French “Toile de Jouy” simply means “cloth from Jouy” (a town in the south-west suburbs of Paris) in English and describes a type of fabric printing. A “Toile” is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a normally off-white background on which is a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral theme. The pattern consists of a single color, most often black, dark red, or blue. Toile is most associated with fabrics, though toile wallpaper is also popular.

My goal when designing a toile is to create classic themes and scenes and either leave them vague in time or bring them into the present. This can be the Peacock Island in Berlin, which today still looks in large parts as it did in 1830, or the beach in St. Peter Ording in northern Germany, which the beach buggies bring into the present. Many of my patterns are created with my own color palette – my brand colors – so they all match in color. Click on the arrows on the big picture on the right to see some examples. All designs are available on fabric, wallpaper and a variety of home decor items at Spoonflower.
